The city of Ottawa has extended its deadline for entering the Ottawa Riverfest parade to 4:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 3.

"The parade is the traditional climax of our Riverfest celebration. We just want to make sure that everyone and all organizations wishing to enter have every opportunity to do so," said Mayor Robert Eschbach.

Sunday, Aug. 5, the parade will step off at 1 p.m., with the parade lineup at 11:30 a.m. Parade entry forms will need to be completed and returned to parade coordinator Alaina Rivers at Ottawa City Hall, 301 W. Madison St.

Forms are available at city hall or online at the Riverfest website, www.ottawariverfest.com. No entries will be accepted on parade day, Aug. 5.

If a parade entry features a vehicle used either to carry parade participants or pull a float, a certificate of liability is required with at least $300,000 of coverage. Parade entry fees are $75.

Defeat.

At the end of a long day of parenting, I feel it. I look around my house and see mess. Mess on my floors and mess in my heart. I pick up toys, clean up dishes, throw in the laundry. I remember the tears, the sibling fights, and the words that I used to wound. I feel drained and lacking, praying for the encouragement to press on tomorrow morning.

I have a feeling that I?m not the only one experiencing this.

The mundane of motherhood is starting to sound clich?. We?re all reading about it, and we?re all writing about it. It resonates across countries and cultures. And while the details change, the result is the same.

We?re all living it.

Because cliches are born out of reality, and the everyday of mothering couldn?t be more real. It?s confusing, it?s busy and often it?s a struggle. But it?s also sacred, and there is rest for us. It?s for all of us, right where we are. It doesn?t just cover our past and secure our future. It?s for now. We need to preach it to ourselves every day. Every minute if necessary, because we forget how much we need it.

Did you yell at your children today? Did you decline an invitation to play so that you could do something else? Did you give in to the lie that joy can?t be found here?

We?ve heard it before, but there is power in these words. When you begin to feel guilty because you aren?t being a good enough mother, remember that you can?t be. We all fall short of God?s glory, but he is working a renewal in our hearts and he is patient.

I am learning that at the end of the day, when I feel weary and ask God to give me strength for tomorrow, that is not a sign of weakness. Christian growth occurs when we finally see past our blindness and realize our dependence on One alone. When we believe that we can?t, but God can.

We don?t serve a distant God, but one who loved us enough to send His son. We can?t get through this life alone, and the weariness comes when we try.

Today, let Christ be your victory.

Hong Kong (Reuters) - Tens of thousands of Hong Kong parents, students and teachers marched in the streets on Sunday in protest against a school curriculum plan they said was an attempt to brainwash students by extolling the achievements of the Chinese Communist party.

The furor focuses on a Hong Kong government-funded 34-page book titled "The China Model" celebrating China's single party Communist state as a unique political system under which its economy and society have flourished.

The book will form the basis of a national education curriculum for students aged six years and older in Hong Kong schools in the coming year, aimed at engendering what officials call a sense of national pride and belonging towards China.

"We don't want our child to be fed this material," said P.S. Ho, who joined the protest along with his wife and four-year-old daughter. "If the initiative continues without changes, maybe we will change schools later or immigrate to another country."

Parents with children in strollers, secondary school students and activists joined the rally on a sweltering afternoon, carrying placards with slogans such as "We don't need no thought control".

Organizers said 90,000 people took part, though police estimates put the turnout at 32,000.

It was the latest in a series of mass protests and gatherings in Hong Kong in recent months, including a July 1 demonstration that drew some 400,000 people demanding improved governance, full democracy, and less interference from Beijing.

"Parents are concerned. We don't want them to brainwash our children's minds," said Linda Wong, a member of a parent concern group and a mother of one.

While the booklet touches on some negative aspects of contemporary Chinese history including unfair land grabs by corrupt officials and a toxic milk powder scandal, it makes no mention of the June 4, 1989 crackdown on pro-democracy protesters in Beijing's Tiananmen Square.

It also describes the U.S. political system as having "created social turbulence" and harmed people's livelihoods.

"This material is given to elementary school students. They don't have the independent thinking capabilities to judge for themselves," said Joseph Wong, 19, a member of a youth activist group.

Hong Kong officials rejected the suggestion they were planning to introduce Chinese-style propaganda, saying the "China Model" booklet was only a guide.

They responded to the protesters' concerns by saying a "broadly representative" committee would be formed to monitor the scheme after its implementation in the coming few years, before deciding whether it becomes a mandatory course or not.

"We definitely would not want to see any so-called brainwashing type of education from happening. If that indeed happens, which we do not believe will happen...we would be the first one to come out to condemn such a situation," said Lee Chack-fan, chairman of a group tasked with drafting the guidelines for the national education scheme.

Do ?Self Help? & ?Management? books really work?

When Covey?s breakthrough book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People first hit the bookshelves I was in my mid-twenties. I was sceptical of the ?self-help? book genre, especially the apparently superficial promise that it would be possible to become highly proficient in something in a short number of simple steps. I assumed that this was merely a money making tactic. I was finally convinced by others to read Covey?s landmark book, however, and thus cautiously embarked on a road of appreciating how this genre can help people.

Taking a leap 20 years further down the track, and I found myself invited as one of only three high profile international keynote speakersto give a keynote and share the stage with Stephen Covey, at a strategic leadership event. We presented together to almost 2,000 business leaders in the Middle East. To hear of Covey?s death set off one of those lightning flash memory sequences encompassing memories of the first time I discovered this genre, through to memories of meeting Covey and presenting alongside him, and finally to the end of the cycle ? hearing of his passing away.

The self help habit

The 7 Habits book alone has sold more than 25 million copies in 38 languages since first publication. What made Covey?s book so successful was that it was one of the most sincere attempts at the time to go much deeper than providing simple rules to follow. It tackled the issue of dealing with ingrained behavioural styles and habits and the values that shape them. If anything, the 7 Habits title didn?t do the concept justice.

As the concept took off, it became a type of corporate religion. Fortune 500 executives lined up for top-dollar seminars where Covey was treated like a rock star. Hillel Italie (Washington Post) summarised the phenomenon by saying that, ?Covey had articulated a philosophy that ? however platitudinous it seemed to detractors ? transcended business and spoke to the centuries-old American values of self-improvement and self-reliance. Covey challenged readers and listeners to think about their character and integrity and a sense of one?s place not only relative to. . . one?s professional standing but one?s place in the cosmos.?

This approach actually had very little to do with business and everything to do with character.

Too much of a good thing?

A quick search on Amazon for the key words ?self help? confronts the browser with 447,108 results. It has been calculated that $750 million worth of business books each year have been sold in America alone, but research shows that managers fail to finish four in every five business books they buy. Further research has shown that out of the 43 companies categorised and celebrated as ?Excellent? in Tom Peter?s seminal work ?In Search of Excellence?, 2 out of 3 lost that top rating within 5 years of publication of the book. In the book ?Witch Doctors?, Economist editors Micklethwait and Wooldridge show from their research that much of the advice dispensed by the self help sources is ?faddish, riddled with contradictions and jargon, based on simplistic formulas, no more reliable than tribal witch doctors? medicine.?

The bookstores are crammed with experts trying to sell us success in a few simple steps, but if it was this simple wouldn?t we all be doing it? Wouldn?t we all already be highly successful? So what can the average person do to navigate this minefield of expert advice and glean something useful?

Why self-help strategies don?t always work

In the book ?Fatland? Greg Critser reveals that more than a generation?s worth of faddish weight-loss programs have only served only to produce the fattest generation of Americans on record. Knowing what to do and being able to actually do it are both very different things. Just as diets don?t usually work, there are no short cuts in improving your life. Passively reading a book or attending a seminar will not produce all the permanent changes you need to make your life perfect. Only picking out the relevant gems and putting in a lot of hard follow up work will. Inspiration and motivation are only the start, not the entire package needed to improve ones self.

The new generation of self-help books are often written by more qualified social psychologists, neurologists, human behaviour scientists etc who reveal why we have trouble acting on advice and the scientific factors involved shaping in habitual behaviours and how they can be changed. Understanding the roots of our behaviours is a good first step to knowing how to manage them effectively.

Management theory has always alternated between cold mathematics and warm humanism, and the pendulum is currently swinging towards the importance of developing ?soft? skills. We will need to know how to integrate the self-help concepts into our leadership styles and behaviours in order to ensure real lasting development. Covey was someone who managed to bridge the gap that can exist between theory and practice, and he should be remembered for his significant contribution to the field. I will certainly always remember the passion and perseverance of a man committed to making a difference in individuals? lives.

The most helpful self-help advice I have received is from the ancient Serenity Prayer which says that we must learn to accept what we cannot change, to find courage to change what we can change, and to seek wisdom in discerning the difference. If something from the myriad of books, seminars and other self-help input can helps us to action this prayer, then undoubtedly we will be able to make the difference needed for ourselves.

West, the outspoken congressman who also represents a Florida district, said he backed Adams because she represents a "new generation of Republican conservatives who have come to the halls of Congress to find solutions and is working tirelessly against some on Capitol Hill who would rather perpetuate the problems."

West's endorsement comes less than a month before the Aug. 14 primary in Florida between Adams and Mica, the chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.

Redistricting pitted Mica against Adams in the central Florida district near Orlando. The fierce fight represents a clash of establishment vs. tea party, federal spending to boost local economies vs. budget cutting to rein in the deficit.

Lawmakers have shown their preferences in the half-dozen Republican and Democratic intraparty battles through campaign contributions, but West's full-throated endorsement is a fresh reminder of tea party solidarity.

Most notably, earlier this year, several Republican leaders signaled their support for Rep. Adam Kinzinger over veteran Rep. Donald Manzullo in the Illinois incumbent vs. incumbent race by contributing to Kinzinger, who prevailed in the March primary.

Adams, a former deputy sheriff and state lawmaker, recently picked up the backing of 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Mica won the support of former presidential candidate Mike Huckabee on Wednesday.

"John Mica is a proven leader who doesn't just talk; he achieves sound conservative results," Huckabee said in a statement from the Mica campaign. "Congressman Mica's 100 percent pro-life, pro-family and pro-Second Amendment record is one I commend and salute."

In accepting West's backing, Adams said the status quo is no longer acceptable.

"The entrenched Republicans and Democrats in Congress who have led us to our nearly $16 trillion debt will be held responsible," she said.

The winner of the Florida primary is likely to prevail in November in the Republican-leaning district.

The revelation came in a low-key way: Monday's obituary from Sally Ride Science, the educational venture she founded a decade ago, referred to Tam O'Shaughnessy as "her partner of 27 years." A spokeswoman for Sally Ride Science, Terry McEntee, said Ride and O'Shaughnessy, who is the company's chief operating officer and executive vice president, worked out the phrasing of the announcement before Ride's death.

In an email today, Sally Ride's?sister, Bear Ride, explained why the former astronaut kept quiet about her sexual orientation.

"In her inherent Norwegian reticence ? in this and so many aspects of her personal life (wrestling with pancreatic cancer, for example) ? she just didn't talk much (see Norwegian comment, and add to that the typical tight-lipped scientist thing)," Bear wrote. "If you read interviews from years and years back, you'll see that there was always a major frustration that she didn't comment much on 'how it feels to be the first American woman in space' ? she just didn't think that way.?She wanted to get the job done. Her personal feelings were just that: personal. Not?right or wrong ? simply Sally. Everyone who knows her well really got that about her."

Bear, a gay Presbyterian minister, takes a different approach.

"I'm a rather out-there advocate for LGBT [lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender] rights?? my partner and I have even been arrested a couple of times in public protest!" she told me. "But that's me, and not Sally."

Here's the essay that Bear Ride has been sending around as a tribute to her sister:

"Sally Ride was the first American woman to go into space and she was my big sister. Sally died peacefully on July 23rd after a courageous 17-month battle with pancreatic cancer.? I was at her side. We grew up in Encino, CA. Our parents, Joyce and Dale Ride, encouraged us to study hard, to do our best and to be anything we wanted to be. ?In 1983?Newsweek?quoted our father?as saying, 'We might have encouraged, but mostly we just let them explore.' Our parents encouraged us to be curious, to keep our minds and hearts open and to respect all persons as children of God. Our parents taught us to explore, and we did. Sally studied science and I went to seminary. She became an astronaut and I was ordained as a Presbyterian minister.

"Sally lived her life to the fullest with boundless energy, curiosity, intelligence, passion, joy, and love. Her integrity was absolute; her spirit was immeasurable; her approach to life was fearless. Sally died the same way she lived: without fear.? Sally's signature statement was 'Reach for the Stars.' Surely she did this, and she blazed a trail for all the rest of us.

"My sister was a very private person.?Sally had a very fundamental sense of privacy, it was just her nature, because we're Norwegians, through and through. People did not know she had pancreatic cancer, this is bound to be a huge shock. For 17 months, nobody knew, and everyone does now. Her memorial fund is going to be in support of pancreatic cancer.

"Most people did not know that Sally had a wonderfully loving relationship with Tam O'Shaughnessy for 27 years.? Sally never hid her relationship with Tam. They were partners, business partners in Sally Ride Science, they wrote books together, and?Sally's very close friends, of course, knew of their love for each other.? We consider Tam a member of our family.

"I hope the?pancreatic cancer community is going to be absolutely thrilled that there's now this advocate that they didn't know about. ?And, I hope the GLBT community feels the same.?I hope it makes it easier for kids growing up gay that they know that another one of their heroes was like them."

Sex has always been a tricky topic for astronauts: In the old days, they worried that if they didn't conform with the "Right Stuff" stereotype, they wouldn't be picked for spaceflights. Issues such as alcohol abuse or marital problems often were swept under the carpet. Is it any surprise, then, that no active or former astronauts have publicly announced that they're gay? Michael Cassutt, the author of "Who's Who in Space," is quoted on Space.com as saying that such an announcement would be a "career-wrecker."

Men and women have been working together on U.S. spacecraft since Ride's history-making flight in 1983. Why not straights and gays??Maybe Sally Ride's low-key way of coming out will represent one small step toward greater acceptance and acknowledgment of the LGBT contribution to the space effort. (I'm using the term "gay" here as a catch-all word for the LGBT community. The fact that Ride was married to fellow astronaut Steven Hawley from 1982 to 1987 makes it complicated to categorize Ride's perspective, based on the public record. And Buzzfeed's Chris Geidner quotes Bear Ride as saying "Sally didn't use labels.")

Sally Ride, the first US woman in space, captured the nation's imagination with her historic journey into space. NBC's Rehema Ellis looks back at the intrepid astronaut's life and legacy after she lost her battle with pancreatic cancer.

Ride's legacy lives on
Ride would no doubt be uncomfortable with a public discussion of her sexuality. She was uncomfortable enough with the celebrity that surrounded her as the first American woman in space. Based on the comments from her family and co-workers, Ride's main concern in the last days of her life was making sure that Sally Ride Science survived her passing.

"I was very fortunate to spend time with her right before she passed away," said Karen Flammer, a research physicist at the University of California at San Diego and one of the founders of Sally Ride Science. "We were able to talk about what she envisioned for our company, and our legacy and her legacy."

Ride's status as a former astronaut wasn't uppermost in her mind, Flammer told me. "Her true passion really was science education, and inspiring more young people, particularly girls, to follow a career path in science and technology," she said.

Since Ride's death, Sally Ride Science's donors have confirmed that they "want to continue funding and supporting our programs," Flammer said. "The transition will be hard, but we want to keep going as a tribute to her."

Those programs include science camps as well as global outreach efforts such as EarthKAM, which lets middle-school students request pictures of Earth to be taken by a digital camera aboard the International Space Station. "We've engaged hundreds of thousands of middle-school students, not only in this country, but around the world," Flammer said.

A similar program, called MoonKAM, lets kids select targets for pictures taken by NASA's GRAIL lunar probes.

Flammer said there will be a new chief executive officer for the company: a woman who has had experience running other educational companies and "who is going to share all of our passions." However, Flammer said it's still too early to announce the CEO's name.

And speaking of names, Flammer and her colleagues are looking into somehow putting Sally Ride's name in space. "Right now, we're in the process of working with NASA on what types of things we can do in her honor. ... Her tribute statement always was 'Reach for the Stars.' That's how she ended the talks she gave to students, or to adults. So we're keeping that in mind with whatever we come up with."

But the most valuable tribute to her memory will be Sally Ride Science.

"She never wanted the celebrity status," Flammer told me. "What she really wanted was for her legacy to continue. This is what she wants to survive her and live on: her name, and her science education company."

On Monday, Carter?s first full day in India, he will attend meetings with India?s Secretary of Defense Shri Shashi Kant Sharma and other senior Indian defense officials, including chiefs of acquisition and research and development. He will also meet with U.S. Ambassador Nancy Powell.

Later in the day, the deputy secretary will speak about U.S.?India defense cooperation in remarks to a gathering hosted by the Confederation of Indian Industry.

Later Monday, Carter will meet separately with Indian Foreign Secretary Ranjan Mathai and National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon.

Tuesday?s scheduled events include a trip to Hyderabad, where Carter will meet with Indian defense industry representatives. He will also tour joint defense facilities operated by a leading Indian defense contractor, Tata Advanced Systems, in separate partnership ventures with Lockheed Martin and Sikorsky Aircraft. The deputy secretary will then return to New Delhi.

From India, Carter will travel to South Korea, the concluding stop on an Asian-Pacific tour that has already taken him to Hawaii, Guam, Japan and Thailand.

ScienceDaily (July 23, 2012) ? With a series of papers published in chemistry and chemical engineering journals, researchers from the Georgia Institute of Technology have advanced the case for extracting carbon dioxide directly from the air using newly-developed adsorbent materials.

The technique might initially be used to supply carbon dioxide for such industrial applications as fuel production from algae or enhanced oil recovery. But the method could later be used to supplement the capture of CO₂ from power plant flue gases as part of efforts to reduce concentrations of the atmospheric warming chemical.

In a detailed economic feasibility study, the researchers projected that a CO₂ removal unit the size of an ocean shipping container could extract approximately a thousand tons of the gas per year with operating costs of approximately $100 per ton. The researchers also reported on advances in adsorbent materials for selectively capturing carbon dioxide.

"Even if we removed CO₂ from all the flue gas, we'd still only get a portion of the carbon dioxide emitted each year," noted David Sholl, a professor in Georgia Tech's School of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering. "If we want to make deep cuts in emissions, we'll have to do more -- and air capture is one option for doing that."

The Georgia Tech research into air capture techniques was funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Papers describing the economic analysis and new adsorbent materials were published in the journals ChemSusChem, Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research, the Journal of Physical Chemistry Letters and the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Carbon dioxide from large sources such as coal-burning power plants or chemical facilities account for less than half the worldwide emissions of the gas, noted Christopher Jones, also a professor in the Georgia Tech School of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering. Much of the remaining emissions come from mobile sources such as buses, cars, planes and ships, where capture would be much more costly per ton.

Jones is collaborating with a startup company -- Global Thermostat -- to establish a pilot plant to demonstrate the direct air capture technique. The technology for capturing carbon dioxide from the air would be similar to that required for removing the gas from smokestack emissions, though CO₂ concentrations in flue gases are dramatically higher than those in the atmosphere.

Flue gases contain about 15 percent carbon dioxide, while CO₂ is found in the atmosphere at less than 400 parts per million. That's a factor of 375, notes Sholl, who said the difference in capture efficiency could be partially made up by eliminating the need to transport CO₂ removed from flue gas to sequestration locations.

"Because the atmosphere is generally consistent, you could operate the capture equipment wherever you had a sequestration site," he said. "I don't think air capture will ever produce carbon dioxide as cheaply as capturing it from flue gas. But on the other hand, it doesn't seem to be wildly more expensive, either."

Based on his work with Global Thermostat, Jones believes that the costs of an optimized process will prove to be even lower than the estimates of Sholl's team. "Sholl's paper is important because it shows that direct capture of CO₂ from the air can be up to ten times less expensive than had been estimated by others," he said. "Process improvements based on their initial modeling study could bring costs down even further."

In its economic analysis, Sholl's team considered all of the energy that would have to be put into the capture process. The cost estimates did not include the capital cost of establishing the capture facilities because the technology is still too new for reliable projections.

The batch extraction process modeled by the Georgia Tech team involves blowing air through a ceramic honeycomb structure coated with dry amino-modified silica material to capture the CO₂, then flowing steam through the structure to release the gas. The technique could produce carbon dioxide that is roughly 90 percent pure.

"The technical challenges are similar to those of flue gas capture: demonstration at scale, demonstration of long-term adsorbent stability and demonstration of process feasibility and stability," Jones said. "Increased funding for air capture work is needed, because most of the funding invested in carbon capture over the past decade has been directed at flue gas capture."

Sholl and Jones have also been contributing to work on flue gas treatment, conducting research into adsorbent materials, including theoretical and experimental research into adsorbent alternatives such as metal-organic framework (MOF) materials.

Among their recent papers on direct capture of CO₂ from the air are:

A Journal of the American Chemical Society paper that described the role of zirconium in producing more efficient amine-based adsorbents. "Past work has focused on maximizing the amount of CO₂ captured per gram of adsorbent by adding ever-increasing amounts of amines," Jones explained. "We are the first to show that an alternate strategy is to change the oxide support that the amines lay on, and for a fixed amount of amine, each amine works more efficiently."
A paper published in ChemSusChem describing the role played by primary, secondary and tertiary amines in capturing carbon dioxide from ultra-dilute gases like air. "We showed conclusively that primary amines are responsible for CO₂ capture from the air, that secondary amines work to some degree, and that tertiary amines don't absorb from air in any appreciable amount," Jones said.
A paper in Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research that describes detailed cost estimates for the air capture process.

Jones believes air capture should be among the options developed to address global warming produced by increasing levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

"Initial demonstrations of the air capture process will probably be targeted for applications that can use the carbon dioxide for commercial purposes," Jones said. "As the technology matures, we envision implementing CO₂ capture from the air as a climate stabilization strategy, in parallel with CO₂ capture from flue gas and enhanced utilization of alternative energies."
