US Department of Commerce (DOC) Office of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs interships

The Department of Commerce (DOC) Office of Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs is offering Fall 2012 internships to engage and empower developing leaders with a passion for public service. The program will expose students or recent graduates to opportunities in the Federal Government and potential careers in public service. Interns will gain unique experience on the staff of the Assistant Secretary for Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs, who serves as the Department?s primary point of contact for Congress and state and local officials.

Full-time students or recent graduates will work closely with the Confidential Assistant to the Assistant Secretary to keep them engaged in the political process, maintain strong lines of communication, and clearly define roles and responsibilities. OLIA Interns will gain important insight into the administration?s interactions with Congress. They will assist with research and analysis of legislation and policy, support outreach to members of Congress, attend Congressional hearings, and participate in inter-agency meetings and briefings. Interns will carry out projects touching on many of the Department?s diverse priorities, and their post within the Office of the Secretary will give them a unique perspective on the Department?s operation and the work of senior staff. Interns also have the opportunity to meet other interns in a variety of settings.

The DOC Fall 2012 Internship Program will run from September through December. This is an unpaid opportunity. Candidates must be available for the duration of the program to be considered for placement. Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in public policy, governmental affairs, public affairs, business and/or community engagement.

Applicants Must Be: A U.S. Citizen Eighteen years of age on or before the first day of the internship Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program at a college, community college, or university (2-4 year institution) OR be a recent college graduate.
